Buying a Used Car for the First Time
Written by Krest Ed
Buying a used car for the first time is nothing more than a guessing game, unless the purchaser knows what to look for, in order to find a safe and dependable vehicle. Judging by looks alone is definitely not the way to decide on transportation.  Even a test drive isn’t a good predictor of how it will function in a week, a month, or a year. Unscrupulous sellers will take advantage of a first time buyer, unless he/she becomes and informed consumer.  It’s important to learn how to recognize a good deal as opposed to 2000 pounds of junk.

Shop Around

When looking for a used car, most people want the transportation yesterday.  They don’t want the hassle of checking out all of the ads in the paper or visiting every car lot in town.  For first time buyers, it’s especially hard to resist the temptation to buy the first used car they like.  In fact, a savvy salesman will try to convince them that they will never find a better deal.  If they don’t take the car today, someone else will.  So, it’s now or never.  With that kind of pressure, it’s no wonder that buyers often get stuck with someone else’s nightmare.

Anyone can make a car look good for a short period of time.  It might even run smoothly during the test drive.  But, it seems like the car starts to fall apart, as soon as it’s parked in the driveway. So, it’s important to take the time to find the right car and not be pressured into making a hasty decision.  If that car is gone tomorrow, so be it.  Most towns have a surplus of used cars for sale. It’s better to keep looking than get stuck with a gas guzzling, oil leaking, engine knocking mess that could leave you stranded somewhere.

Check it Out

Of course, by the looks of the exterior and the interior of the vehicle, you will probably not be able to tell whether it is a fuel hog that needs a can of oil every other day.  You might not be able to hear, if it has a mechanical problem that is going to cost you big bucks to repair, in the near future. Unless you work on cars as a hobby or a living, you need to have a professional check it out.

You will need an independent mechanic to look the vehicle over, in order to make sure there are no hidden problems.  If you are buying the used car from a dealer, the salesperson may tell you that their mechanic checked it out, and it’s a safe and dependable older car.  Big deal!  They want to sell the car.  It needs to be someone that has no vested interest in whether you are buying the used car.

Unless the seller is asked, point blank, you may never know if the frame has been damaged or the front end is permanently out of alignment.  On the outside, the car may look good, but the safety of the vehicle is compromised.  If it’s involved in another accident, you and any passengers are more likely to be seriously injured.  At the very least, the tires will wear out faster.  If the seller won’t let you check it out, take your business elsewhere.

Research

With a little research, you will discover whether you a buying a used car for a fair price that will also be a dependable source of transportation for the foreseeable future.  To check out the value of a used car, you can judge by the same criteria that used car dealers possess.  Check out the Blue Book value of the vehicle.  While there is actually a blue book that lists the value of all makes and models of automobiles, based on their year of manufacture, you can get the same information by going online.  It will only take a couple of minutes to discover if the seller has priced the car too high.

Next, you will need the VIN of the vehicle.  Use it to check and see the history of the vehicle.  How many owners have gotten rid of the car?  Has it ever been in an accident?  You can find out two very important details that will help you determine whether you are getting a good deal or about to make a bad decision. You want to make sure you are not purchasing a car with a background of numerous mechanical problems or getting stuck with a car that might not be as safe, because it has been in a serious accident.

Buying a used car for the first time is exciting, if you know how to spot a good deal.  As long as you shop around, have the vehicle checked out, and do a little research regarding its background, you can drive away with transportation that will be dependable for years to come.
